Small and steady is worth more than large and once.
Our costs are ingredients, hall hire and supplies. Nothing else. A little arriving every month is what lets us promise a date to people.
About tax receipts
We are a non profit society incorporated under the Societies Act of British Columbia. We are not currently a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency, which means we cannot issue an official donation receipt for income tax purposes and a gift to us is not tax deductible today. We would rather tell you that plainly than let you find out at tax time. The day it changes, we will say so here.
Ways to give
A standing monthly amount
Twenty dollars a month arriving reliably is worth more to us than most one time gifts. Set it up with your bank to info@nishkamsevasociety.ca.
Sponsor a langar
Families have always done this. Cover the ingredients for one langar and we will tell you what it fed.
Goods instead of money
If you would rather buy the things yourself, the list below is what we actually run out of.
What to send, and what not to
This is not us being fussy. Anything we cannot hand out we have to store, sort and eventually dispose of, and that costs volunteer hours.
Please do send
- Sealed atta, dal, rice, oil, sugar and tea
- Unopened non perishable food within its best before date
- New socks and underwear, still packaged
- Unopened toiletries, including sanitary products
- Clean warm coats, gloves, hats and blankets
Please do not send
- Home cooked food, for food safety reasons
- Anything containing meat, fish or eggs, since langar is vegetarian
- Opened or part used toiletries
- Used underwear or used socks
- Furniture or large items, which we have nowhere to store
A best before date is about quality rather than safety, and many sealed foods are still perfectly good past it. Even so, we only hand out food that is within its date, because the person receiving it deserves the same thing you would choose off the shelf.
Where the money goes
We are small enough that this list is genuinely the whole of it.
Ingredients
The largest line by far. Atta, dal, rice, vegetables, oil and tea for langar.
Hall hire
We have no building of our own, so every gathering means renting a room.
Supplies
Gloves, foil trays, cups, boxes and the consumables every event burns through.
Insurance and filings
Liability cover for our volunteers and the annual filings a society has to make.
If you have supported us and you want to see what it went to, ask. We will send you the actual numbers rather than a percentage.
Time is worth more than money to us right now.
We are a new society and what we are shortest of is hands. If you are choosing between the two, choose this one.
